  1. I had my open concept entryway/living room/dining room painted in a semigloss and it highlighted all the imperfections on the wall. I have the orange peel finish on my walls and they are pretty lumpy in areas. I had the same area recently painted in a flat finish and it looks so much better. The painter has done apartment buildings for years and he says flat paint finish looks the best, and I agree with him. I don’t have children and rarely have scuff marks.
My opinion is that factors like your lifestyle, the condition of your walls and even if you have less walls with an open concept home should be taken in consideration before you spend thousands of dollars on paint. I also had one wall painted navy blue as an accent and I love it. Definitely will have at least one dark wall in the bedroom, which is west-facing and gets way too bright just from the windows. I enjoy the information given but also do my research when spending on home improvement.

    1. Semi gloss is like the extreme opposite of flat though. There are some finishes that are more in the middle

    2. @Crazy Cat Lady Honestly, I don’t remember the exact finish except it was shiny, it was painted a few years back. But the point is that flat hides imperfections in the wall much better.

  2. I am absolutely a book lover—I have two English degrees and used to teach college literature—but to me, living in a normal house (not a home staged for show), coffee table books just contribute to clutter. They do look pretty in staged homes, but even then I don’t understand why everyone buys the same ones. Buy something meaningful to you.

  3. Kiva , Two Words:
    “Carpet Tape” !!
    Saves One> From
    Falls & Breaks 😭 ,& Shifting Carpets 💯%√√√
    PS: Optional & Peaceful
    *1)Nite Lights
*2) 20 watt yellow bug lights> works 4′ bathroom runs as Lowlight not glaring or constantly on & off
*3) romantically inclined= try Battery operated Candle Light or
*4) fairy lights inside Glass Container for Romantic Feel & Safety Concerns

  4. One tip I do for the coffee table books is, I turn the flap cover of my hardcover books inside out which is usually white and works like a charm. I have a bunch of James Patterson books that I use.

  5. Yes, Kiva! No black bedrooms – or navy, or chocolate, or ANY dark colour! How depressing are they😢. All-black rooms are like all-white room: totally devoid of character or personality. They’re generic, which is probably why designers like them. Adding “texture” doesn’t mollify the boredom they elicit.

  6. Agree with all, exceeeeeeeeept the bedroom one. I love it dark because I wake up with the tiniest fairy light, so the darker the better. Trade-off is that that room is not dual purpose 🙂

  7. We’ve found that motion sensor lights are SUPER helpful in entry ways. We usually park in the garage and enter the house through the laundry room. In the evening it’s too dark and you can’t turn the lights on if your hands are full. We put a motion sensor in the laundry room and it has made a world of difference.

  8. I painted my bedroom Bunglehouse Blue, a jewel toned dark blue, a couple of months ago. The blue is very soothing and the richness of the paint is so pretty. It works with my red oak floors. The room gets northern lights but it never feels cold or dingy. I can’t wait to cozy up in there in the winter! Maybe I would feel differently if this were also my home office but it’s just my big comfy bed, two nightstands, an antique fireplace surround, and an antique chair. I think it’s perfect! I actually disagreed with a lot of these. I love books and I’ll always have books incorporated in my decor (I’ve also read all of them and only get coffee table books I appreciate). My flat paint in the hallway cleans up easily with a magic eraser. What you describe as “closed shade lamps” are task lamps, which are only meant to light a small area like a desk or table, not the whole room. Although I did always hate my then-boyfriend’s arch lamp. It was always in the way!

  9. I love coffee table books. I decorate with them opened. Then every few days I turn to another page. 😍.

  10. I have motion detected night lights and they are perfect for peeing in the middle of the night especially with my boys

  11. The cardinal sin: matte paint finish in a bathroom. The humidity of the shower will instantly create drip marks on your walls!
